The Manriquez Family Exhibition 6/4-7/13, 2007

PRESS RELEASE

Start Date: Immediately Stop Date: Thursday, July 12, 2007 Five members of the Manriquez family — David, Dion, Bonnie, Marc and Aron — exhibit together beginning June 4, at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska City. The Manriquez Family of Artists exhibition features painting, sculpture, drawing and collage, and includes recent works as well as selections from the family collection. The Manriquez artists have exhibited widely in juried and one-person shows, but this is the first to feature their work in one exhibition. Brothers David and Dion grew up in Omaha and graduated from South High School. David earned a bachelor’s degree and teaching credentials from Peru State College and taught art at Christ the King Catholic School and Bancroft Elementary in Omaha for over thirty years. Several colorful murals on buildings in South Omaha are the work of David and his students. Dion earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) and a master of fine arts from the University of Iowa; and he taught art at the University of Wisconsin-Stout until retiring in 2001. Works by Bonnie Manriquez, a graduate of the UNO art program, and by two members of a second generation of Manriquez artists, Marc and Aron, are also included in the exhibition. Bonnie has taught art in many K-12 outreach programs including as a Nebraska Arts Council artist-in-the-schools and currently teaches at Adventures in Art in Benson. Bonnie created work for the Benchmarks public art project in Omaha, and Marc participated in two J. Doe projects. Both Marc and Aron are pursuing art degrees at UNO. Although the style and subject matter of each artist is very individual, the work of each can be described as vibrant, bold, intense, and often complex. “The greatest influence shared among us,” the Manriquez artists agree, “is our mutual encouragement.” In conjunction with The Manriquez Family of Artists exhibition, David and Bonnie will present a workshop for children on Saturday, June 23, “Sun Gods and Effigies,” an introduction to Mexican art. The Manriquez Family of Artists runs June 5 through July 12. The public is invited to meet the artists and enjoy refreshments at a reception on Saturday afternoon, June 16, 1 - 4:00 p.m. The Kimmel Harding Nelson Center Gallery is located at 801 3rd Corso in Nebraska City and is open Monday through Thursday and the first and third Saturdays of each month from noon to 4 p.m. Appointments at other times are welcome. Both the exhibit and the reception are free, handicapped accessible, and open to the public. For more information, call 402-874-9600 or visit www.khncenterforthearts.org. Divide and Conquer

Divide and Conquer, Collage, M.Manriquez, 5/2005.     A quick collage to accompany a poem with the same title, included in a book of poetry I had to put together for a final project in a creative writing course. Nothing really new here and the same goes for the poem for that matter....though somewhat amusing! It may have possibilities as a large painting?

J. DOE II,Public Art Project- "Recycle Woman"

J. Doe II,Public Art Project- "Recycle Woman"..............In mid 2002, I was asked again to participate in a follow up to the highly successfull, J. Doe I of the previous year. The concept being the same as before - except the sculptures would be viewed indoors over the winter season. This time fewer artists participated and it lacked the public excitement that had surrounded the first event. I thought I couldn't go wrong by doing it again, as it would give me a chance to create the counter part to "Recycle Man" and of course, more exposure. This one was a little tougher to create being a female form and not pushing it over the specifications set by the project as to what would be acceptable as "public art". In the end, I think people were a little taken a back by it presence but nothing was said. In fact the public response to the sculpture was very positive. I used the same methods to create the sculpture as before, attaching found and donated junk I referbished. "Recycle Woman", was eventually sold privately to the same patrons who owned "Recycle Man". When both sculptures were installed together in thier home the presence was immense! A fitting end to a grueling but extremely positive experience.......................................................................................Special Thanks to: Steve Jacobs and Pete Lochren for thier assistance with both projects!     I've included the link to the J. doe II, "Recycle Woman"- web page for more pics. and info on the project.  http://steveadamsomaha.tripod.com/JdoeOmaha/JII_Pages/Recycle_Woman.html

J. DOE Public Art Project -"RECYCLE MAN"

J. DOE Public Art Project - "Recycle Man"..............In 2001, I paticipated in the J. Doe Public Art Project in Omaha Ne.  This project included many local artists who were called upon to use thier talents to create a work of art from a prefabricated fiberglass form of a figure. The works were then placed in public places throughout the city for the summer. Afterwards, the J.Doe sculptures were either actioned off of sold privately. The project was highly successfull, recieving much press and news coverage, even inspiring a publication that featured the art and the artists. Overall, I found it to be a very positive experience. I've included links to the "Recycle Man" web page from the J.Doe website. There you can view the other works and info. The other link is to my fiend and fellow artists- P.A.L.,who also participated and owns the 906 Studio.  http://steveadamsomaha.tripod.com/JdoeOmaha/JPages/Recycle_Man.html  and http://steveadamsomaha.tripod.com/JdoeOmaha/JPages/ReinCARnation.html

THE SANDSKIN CD COVER

The SANDSKIN CD COVER.........ARRRGH!!! another cover unfinished! I started this project some time ago. It's for my friend Brian's grinding Black metal project, Sandskin. The forthcoming Sandskin release is entitled, "Reversal of Common Perspectives". Both the front and back cover are finished except for the cd title, song titles and credits. The main delay is because the text looked weak when scaled down to its proper size. I'm now doing the text layout seperately, both the text and images will be combined then printed. I still have a few tricks to try so it may workout yet! The cover image was originally created from photos of a couple of my sculptures, then combined and enhanced through the use of the computer. one  of the jpegs is uncropped so the entire piece can be seen, the rest are cropped for printing.  ..............................................................Image 1, Sandskin - front cover - entire image .................................................................Image 2, Sandskin - back cover .....................................................................Image 3, Sandskin - front cover w/ title

The PORTRAIT SERIES.......these are all works which focus on portraiture alone of people other than myself. Some are derived from particular people, trying to capture thier essence but are not necessarily thier exact likeness, others were meant to be representational. This is an ongoing series started back in 2002. Here are a few I have documented both old and new.........Image 1, CHAD ................Image 2, Portrait of a woman - x

UPCOMING ENTRIES

As I've been putting this site together, I've been in a rush to get the content up....consequently, some things are a little out of order/context. Many works are yet to be documented and I may only have partial documentation of a series or some work that  doesn't relate to a series at all. I'm trying to put this together with what i've on hand........ Ultimately, I would like to organize this site so people can get a better idea of the body of my work over the last few years, as well as, to keep up to date with current events/work....so again, I ask that you bear with me as I put this thing together!                                                                                                Some of the future entries I'm trying to compile are as follows: GENERAL ARTIST STATEMENT..............ARTIST STATEMENT on THESIS WORKS......ARTIST STATEMENT on SCULPTURE..........................................FINISHED SEPULCRO COVER!...........SANDSKIN ALBUM COVER..........PORTRAIT SERIES, 2002 till present, complete documentation pending.................SCULPTURE, larger works and public art projects, J. doe I & II, sculpture for Y.E.S. Benifit,.............SCULPTURE, box sculptures - illuminated and assemblege pieces..............SCULPTURE,head series..................UPDATED IMAGES of THESIS SERIES..............STRIPPERS and the STRIPCLUB SERIES..............MOST RECENT WORK,( 2005 New Years Exhibit of the "WATCHERS" series), documentation pending - still on view.

Sepulcro Album Cover

I'm currently working on the album cover for Sepulcro's forthcoming release, "Escape of the Unborn". It seems as though I've been working on this project for an eternity now. Progress has been slow, as I've been consistantly interrupted due to course work, exhibitions, illness and prior projects that I've committed to.............fortunately, the band has been very patient!..........I took this photo a couple of days ago as part of the documentation process. The painting is near completion at this point, all thats left are some minor elements and details ---Hope to have the project wrapped up in a couple of weeks. An earlier stage of the painting can be seen by hitting Sepulcro's link on this site.

More on the THESIS SERIES cont.

Some additional pics. of the working process. The underdrawings from 2 of the series, I cant recall which? maybe the "yellow painting" and the "blue". Found one from the 1st exhibition of the work at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

More on the THESIS SERIES

The final and 4th painting within the Thesis Series. I refer to it as 'the green painting'. At the moment I only have the documentation of the painting as it progressed from its initial stage from a drawing till about midway through..........Unfortunately, no documentation of the work completed. At a later date I plan to post the pictures from the exhibit at the 906 studio and updated pictures of each within the series. I guess what is of importance here is that you can see me at work, which gives a sense of the scale of the paintings and a little bit of the working method.
